7. In a former part of this Report I have stated that the space shewn in the tracing, below the deck, was capable of receiving Efficient Engines and Boilers of 60 H.P., or even of 40 H.P., with the requisite Coal supply. As the strength of this Report rests primarily on that basis I propose to add a few remarks in support of it.

10. The total length allowed for Engines, Boilers, and Coal is 120 feet. The length required for Engines of 60 H.P. including front clearance from the after bulkhead, is about 69 feet. Beyond this there must be, say, a 5 feet space for stoking.

stoking. Out of the 120 feet of total length there is left, therefore, for the Boilers a length of only 46 feet, which is obviously insufficient to receive, say, a gunboat Boiler, with tubes beyond the full grate. Such a Boiler would, in fact, require a length of about 17 feet, including the requisite 2 1/2 feet at the back for giving access to the tubes.

This form of Boiler, which is one of the lowest that can be used, therefore cuts it out of the question.

11. If, on the other hand, other plans of tubular Boilers had been adopted - such, for example, as those which have the tubes...
